New Project: Crooked Crow Couture

After only just setting up her studio space in Thorn St over the Christmas holidays, and just about to launch her opening party, our newest project Crooked Crow Couture has made a lightning more to a new nest to make way for a commercial tenant.

Light on her feet and ready to fly at a moment's notice, the good news is that Lorri is setting up her new shop at 19 Wolfe St and expects to be open and trading in the next couple of weeks.

Visit Crooked Crow Couture for original handcrafted wearable textile art in the form of masks, millinery, veils and accessories. More

From the desk of Neon Zoo

You have probably visited the Renew shops & galleries, but it's not often you get to see what is happening behind the scenes in Renew office spaces. So, what's new in the Neon Zoo? The launch of the The Bistro Rebrand. These Renewers were recently asked by the new owners of The Bistro on Darby St to rebrand the iconic Newcastle restaurant.

The brief was to show the change that can be expected and to set the scene for ‘modern day comfort food, the food their chefs love to share & cook’. The new logo and branding can be seen on the menus and signage and has been well received to date. As part of their ‘research’ Neon Zoo have tried many of their tasty treats and can highly recommend that you treat yourself to a meal at The Bistro soon. Visit Neon Zoo gallery online.

New property APP working bee

Renew Newcastle is about to unveil new properties which will be re-opened and activated with creative projects next month.

The first of these new properties to be re-opened next month is an historic ground floor office on Watt St, which requires basic maintenance work to make it safe and ready to occupy. The site has been vacant for more than three years, but Renew Newcastle is working with local property owner Tony Lawler, with the help of volunteers from local property consultancy group APP Corporation, to bring the property up to scratch.

A few weeks ago 16 professional staff from APP traded their laptops and suits for paint brushes and rollers in an all-day Working Bee to refresh the Watt St property and prepare it for safe occupation. APP manages some of the largest projects in the region and is enthusiastically involved in the renewal and re-development of our city. APP Northern NSW Branch Manager, Peter McNally said “By cleaning up the site we improve the street amenity, but also increase the owner’s chance of a securing a longer term commercial tenant. We all want to see Newcastle’s CBD thriving and the boarded-up buildings active again. By our staff getting in there and making it happen, APP is actively contributing to the city’s renewal.”

In action below, L to R, Ethan Clark, Peter Allen, Andrew Day. Thanks fellas!

Update on Latest Project Proposals & Properties

We've just closed our latest Application Round, inviting new project proposals for creative use of empty spaces in Newcastle CBD. What an influx of great new ideas! We sat down for 47 pre-lodgement interviews with potential applicants, received 15 more enquiries, and ended with 40 new project proposals.

Right now we are meeting with applicants to discuss their proposals, as well as matching some of those projects which were ready to go with empty properties in the Hunter St Mall area and East end. Stay tuned for news on a bunch of new projects opening late-Feb.
